A Land Rover Defender 110-style body is the natural starting point for a Camel Trophy-inspired rig, especially for builders chasing the long-wheelbase expedition profile. A Defender 90 can also work, but it creates a more compact, aggressive trail truck rather than the classic loaded-overland look. The key is matching body length, wheelbase, and slider position before you commit to paint, interior work, or body-mounted accessories.
Choose a chassis with a proven low-speed drivetrain, realistic axle placement, and enough room for a full-size battery. Portal axles are useful when the course is deep, wet, and rutted because they add clearance at the differential housing. Their trade-off is additional rotating mass and a higher driveline, so they need quality gears, properly set mesh, and a chassis setup that does not feel tippy.
A standard straight-axle chassis can be equally effective for a scale-focused truck, particularly if the terrain is mostly rock, roots, and packed dirt. What matters more than axle type is predictable steering, a low-mounted battery, and a transmission that can hold a line at walking pace. A fast motor will not make an expedition rig better.
